I have been listening to punk rock music for quite a while now and I consider myself part of the punk culture. Punk is a culture that originated in the 1970’s among the working class teenagers and young people of urban areas, notably New York, Washington D.C., California and England. Punk started as the new rebellious thing for teenagers to get into after the hippies of the 60s. Punk has been around long enough now, that it has developed its own discourse community, a whole culture of slang words and song lyrics that only mean something if you are part of it. Inside of this culture of rebellion, there are groups of people with similar political and social ideas. That’s why when I had to pick a topic, my mind went here first. Punk rock is extremely political. It has long been a very fertile culture for many political movements to grow out of and latch onto. That’s why I chose to focus on the political movements of punk music and culture.
